Find the ship that fits your kind of trip.
Get a feel for life aboard, compare the cabins, and pick up a few useful tips before you choose.
A ship worth coming back to after a day ashore.
A veranda for your morning coffee, a lounge with a view, and enough room to find your own favorite spot. Here’s how Viking’s ocean ships fit into your vacation.
You may choose the cruise for the ports, but you will spend plenty of time on the ship, too. Viking’s ocean fleet gives you more places to eat, relax, and enjoy the evening than its river ships, while keeping the atmosphere fairly easy to settle into. The appeal is having choices without needing a daily strategy to get around.
How big are Viking’s ocean ships?
Viking Orion and the original ocean-ship design accommodate 930 guests. Newer ships such as Viking Vela and Viking Mira carry 998. That is a noticeable step up from a river ship, but still fewer than the several thousand guests found on many large ocean liners.
Many spaces and features are familiar across the fleet. We would compare the route, departure date, and available rooms before paying more simply to sail on the newest ship.
Where you might spend your time aboard
- Explorers’ Lounge: big windows and seats facing the view. Make a point of finding it early, especially on a scenic approach to port.
- The Living Room: a central place to meet up, read, or listen to music without committing to a whole evening out.
- The pools: the main pool has a retractable roof, and the infinity pool looks out from the stern. A cooler-weather itinerary does not have to mean giving up a swim.
- The Nordic Spa: a different way to spend a quiet stretch aboard, with a sauna and Snow Grotto. Check treatment prices separately before booking an appointment.
- The theater and music venues: room for presentations, performances, and live music in the evenings. Take a look at the daily program before heading straight back to your cabin after dinner.
Every cabin has a veranda. What does an upgrade buy?
You do not need to move into a suite just to sit outside. The starting Veranda category already has a private balcony. The useful question is what the next category adds for the price on your particular sailing.
- Veranda and Deluxe Veranda: on Viking Orion, both are listed at 270 square feet including the veranda. A higher category can change the location and benefits without adding floor space.
- Penthouse Veranda: the Orion example is 338 square feet including outdoor space. Compare this when a little more room matters on a longer trip.
- Suites: layouts and sizes vary. Look at whether you want a separate living room, rather than judging only by the category name.
Reservation windows, minibar arrangements, and other benefits can differ by category. We will help you compare the actual inclusions instead of assuming “Deluxe” means a larger room. The figures above are examples from Orion, not measurements for every ship in the fleet.
A few details we would sort out before you book
- Cabin position: if motion bothers you, ask about a more central location and the sailing conditions on your route. No cabin makes rough water disappear.
- What sits overhead: check the deck plan for public areas above the room, especially if you like an early night.
- Meals and reservations: browse the dining choices and arrange any advance bookings available with your category. Leave yourself some flexibility for nights when you return late from a tour.
- The number of sea days: a balcony or extra sitting space may matter more on a long crossing than on a week when you are out exploring every day.
Use the ocean destination ideas to narrow down the trip, then bring us the cabin categories you are considering. We can put the price difference next to the benefits and see whether the upgrade earns its place in your budget.
