Viking cruise packing list: what to bring

A practical checklist for your Viking cruise, with clothes, carry-on essentials, day-bag items, and tips for packing less.

Start with your shoes. A pair that feels fine on the walk to your mailbox may feel very different after a morning on cobblestones. Wear your sightseeing shoes on a few longer walks before they go in the suitcase.

This checklist is a starting point for a week on a European river cruise. It also works for many ocean itineraries with a few changes for the weather. For an expedition sailing, use Viking’s destination-specific equipment list first.

Your Viking cruise packing checklist

Keep these in your carry-on

  • Passport, any required visas, cruise documents, and flight and hotel confirmations.
  • Travel insurance details, emergency contacts, and a separate copy of your passport.
  • Prescription medicines in their original labeled containers, plus what you need if your return is delayed.
  • Glasses, spare glasses or contact lenses, hearing-aid supplies, and any other daily essentials.
  • Phone, charging cable, charger, and any airline-permitted power bank. Check your airline’s battery rules.
  • A change of clothes, underwear, and a small toiletry kit within airport liquid limits.
  • Wallet, payment cards, and a little local currency for small purchases.

Clothes and shoes for a week

  • Two pairs of broken-in shoes: your main walking pair and a comfortable backup for wet days.
  • Four or five tops that work with the same two or three pairs of trousers, shorts, or skirts.
  • One sweater or fleece and a lightweight rain jacket with a hood.
  • Two or three dinner outfits made from those same pieces: a collared shirt, blouse, simple dress, or smart trousers. Check the current dress guidance for your ship.
  • Comfortable shoes for dinner; leave shoes that pinch at home.
  • Underwear, socks, sleepwear, and a small laundry bag.
  • A scarf or light layer and clothes that cover shoulders and knees for religious sites.
  • Sun hat and sunglasses.
  • Swimwear only if your ship or hotel has facilities you plan to use. The typical 190-guest European Longship does not have a pool.

For a day ashore

  • A small zipped crossbody bag or lightweight daypack.
  • Sunscreen, lip balm, tissues, and a travel-size hand sanitizer.
  • A refillable water bottle, or space in your bag for the water you take ashore.
  • A compact umbrella if you prefer one to a rain hood.
  • Phone or camera, with enough free storage for photos.
  • A photo of the ship’s contact details and the day’s meeting point, plus an offline map.
  • Blister dressings and any personal items you need during a full day away from the ship.

Toiletries and small extras

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and your usual personal-care products.
  • Plug adapters for your hotels and any outlets you plan to use. An adapter changes the plug shape, not the voltage.
  • Charging cables for each device. Check the outlet and USB arrangements for your particular ship.
  • Packing cubes or a few zip bags to keep small items together.
  • A foldable tote for market purchases and a little space in the suitcase to bring them home.

A few things that save suitcase space

Pack outfits, not individual favorites. Lay everything out and make sure each bottom works with at least two tops. Repeating dinner clothes is perfectly reasonable; nobody needs seven separate evening looks.

Put some of each person’s clothes in both checked bags. If one bag arrives late, neither traveler is left with only what they wore on the plane. Keep the first-day essentials in your carry-on either way.

Check the cabin amenities before packing the hair dryer. Viking’s standard European Longships list a hair dryer and toiletries. Bring your preferred products if you need them, but there is no reason to pack duplicates automatically.

Plan around laundry. European Longships offer a laundry service; do not assume they have a guest laundry room. Check the price and turnaround before deciding how many days of clothing to bring.

Change the list for the season

Christmas markets: add a warm coat, gloves, hat, scarf, warm socks, and water-resistant walking shoes. You may stand outside for longer than you expect. Summer: choose breathable clothes and take sun protection even on an overcast morning. Spring and fall: a rain shell over a sweater gives you more options than one bulky jacket.

Check forecasts for several stops along your route a few days before leaving, not just the arrival airport. For polar expeditions, confirm exactly which outerwear and boots Viking supplies before buying or packing specialist gear.
